Standardizing DALI lighting control with wireless networks
In the last few weeks, DiiA has announced several agreements with other industry organizations that will accelerate the adoption of IoT-enabled commercial lighting systems by creating specifications that bring together DALI lighting-control features and wireless networking. DiiA is working with these partners to develop suitable certification programs.
Two different approaches are being taken by DiiA and its partners. One option is to use an application gateway to translate between DALI and the wireless protocol of choice.
DiiA is working with the Zigbee Alliance to create specifications for DALI to Zigbee gateways, and is also working with Bluetooth SIG to specify a standardized Bluetooth mesh interface for DALI lighting devices.
The second option is to use an underlying wireless carrier to transport the DALI commands. DiiA is working with the Thread Group to develop specifications for DALI over Thread networking. Since Thread is IP-based, this opens the possibility for a DALI over Thread network to communicate directly with other IP-based networks in a building.
DiiA is also developing specifications for DALI over Bluetooth mesh networking. Other wireless protocols, and other IP-based protocols (both wired and wireless) will be considered in the future.
